GANGA DUSSEHRA falls on the 8th of June this year.
It is also called as GANGAVATARAN (“Descent
of Ganga”). It falls on the Dashami
Tithi of Jyaista Maasa, Shukla Paksha.
This day is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. This is the day Ganga descended to the Earth
to accomplish her mission to purge the cursed souls of Bhagiratha’s
ancestors. Before coming to Earth,
Goddess Ganga was residing in the Kamandal of Lord Brahma.
Since Goddess Ganga brought with her the
Purity of Heaven, taking bath in Ganges and offering Charity on Ganga Dussehra
day is considered very high auspicious.
It is widely believed that the holy dip in Ganges on Ganga Dussehra day
can purge all type of sins.
Ganga Dussehra is different from Ganga Saptami (which was on 6th May 2014). Though Ganga Saptami is also dedicated to Ganga, Ganga Saptami is the day Ganga was reborn.
