BJP - OPPOSE ONLY WHEN REQUIRED!

The Political opponents of Congress-led UPA have managed to paint the government in black.  The inaction, inefficiency and corruptions are been exposed more or less on a weekly basis.  The CAG has been providing enough ammunition to the UPA Opponents to continue relentless attack on the Government.  The IAC successfully provided a platform for the common man to vent their displeasure against the Government.  Arvind Kejriwal and his team have also thrown in their hat by exposing the corruption in the Government.  All these has really helped the BJP, the principal opposition party, in bringing disrepute to the government and to the Congress-led UPA.

With the winter session of the Parliament set to begin on Thursday,  all eyes will be on how the BJP and its allies approach this session.  Will they stall the proceedings of the Parliament?  Will they debate every legislation and bill on its merits and assure the people of India that they are the right choice of the people for the next general elections?

Having successfully managed to make the next general election a difficult proposition for the Congress, the BJP must now tread carefully to capitalize on this, if it really wants to get back to power in the Country.  The BJP has been crucifying every single leader of the Congress-led UPA, named in all these scams.  The BJP got into the habit of passing Judgments immediately either through Press-conferences or on TV channels.  All these are good Political tactics to score brownie points.  But the time has come now for them to act responsibly.

The functioning of the Government in the right direction is a collective responsibility of the Party in power and the Party in the opposition.  Common Public might not understand this and would always like to think that the responsibility squarely is on the ruling party.  The Opposition is supposed to oppose and question certain decisions and procedures of the Government whenever such decisions are against the interest of the People.

Right now, we have a situation where the opposition is active on past events that have been exposed now.  Which brings to the primary question as to what were the opposition doing when these activities took place.  Why didn’t they add pressure on the Government of that day in explaining such activities, be it the allocation of 2G or allocation of Coal Blocks, Land Deals in Haryana, etc.  I don’t want to go into the details of these scams as a lot has been floating around in the Public Domain.

The policy paralysis that prevails now in certain departments and ministries of the Government is directly or indirectly attributed to the behavior of the Opposition as well.  People who are responsible for designing and implementing the policies and procedures will be forced to delay for the fear of being indicted in future for some wrong doing. We the people of India are the sufferers.

Thanks to the policy paralysis, vigilant watch of the Opposition and the ever judgmental media, things are moving albeit in snail’s pace.  The Current Account deficit is increasing and the economic growth is not promising enough.  India may have to catch up to gain the status of Emerging Economy.  The Investor confidence is dipping and more and more Indian Companies have displayed their displeasure with this Government.

The government has pepped up the financial markets by talking about policies.  Though these cannot be termed as a break-through reforms, they are minor reforms nevertheless.  The BJP can oppose these announced reforms and force a roll-back from the Government.  Very heavy political brownie points can be scored out of this.  But is this what the BJP be doing now?  Is this what the country needs now?  Time and again the BJP and its allies have implied that the “people of India do not like these policies” or “it is against the wish of the people of India”.  Are BJP and its allies the people of India?   As an initiative, neither the UPA nor the NDA have opted to know the pulse of the people by providing an online opinion poll either through their website or through other media.

Time has now come for BJP to show more responsibility to really convince the people of India that they are the Party who can make a difference.  Opposing all the policies just for the sake of it is no longer required.  The people of India are aware of the Scams and the efficiencies and inefficiencies of the Government.  They will use their wisdom in voting accordingly whenever the next general elections are called for.

In an attempt to de-stabilize the government, if BJP and its allies target the Government on all its policies and question all its measures, the economy will be hit very badly .  It will only make things worse for the BJP and its allies, if they get to power in the next general election.

Morally, the BJP and its allies have gained victory of some sort which can act positively for them in the next general election.  But if they want to succeed when they come to power, they have to play the game carefully and more tactfully.  The reforms of the Government will not begin to show the desired results immediately.   Even if the BJP allows the Government to carry out certain reforms now, the results will be shown only few years from now.  If the BJP and its allies get to power in the next general election, the results of the reforms will start showing up during their rule. This will help they show a rosy picture of their governance.  BJP and its allies should look beyond the next general election and act strategically.

If BJP and its allies still want to stall the functioning of both the houses, an act at which they have gained mastery, things will only get worse for them, if they get to power in the next general election, as they predict.

For the betterment of the future of the Indian economy, the BJP and its allies should oppose only when required and debate every issue in its right merits in the appropriate forum and force the government to pass legislations and reforms with great care.  This is what is expected from the principle opposition party of the day.

I hope the BJP and its allies approach the coming winter session more sensibly and do not sacrifice the future of Indian People and the Indian Economic Story in a bid to stop the Government from passing bills.
