The Game of Cricket is a kind of Sport for many; it is a Passion for some, Religion for over a Billion in the Sub Continent, Business for the IPL Franchisees and a Teacher for a few in this Los Angeles suburb of Compton.
Once known for notorious gang activity, Compton has taken cricket as the Teacher to civility. Famous Hollywood Movie Producer Katy Haber took the game into this suburb. She along with Ted Hayes a US Homeless Activist, who was the first recipient of Cricket as a Teacher, spread the values and the spirit of the Game across the youngsters in the Community, many of whom until then, by default joined one Gang or another either after completing or dropping out of school.
The true spirit of the Game which is a British Pride for Gentlemen activity has taken strong roots in this suburb and has attracted many homeless and former Gang members. To market the spirit of the Game must have been surely a difficult one. One has to play the Game to enjoy it.
In 1995, Ted Hayes and Katy Haber gradually managed to form a Team which they called it LA Krickets and had its Head Quarters at Dome Village Community for the Homeless in Downtown Los Angeles. They have gradually added more members and have unearthed great cricketing talents.
The game has taught civility to many of them in their camp and they have resurrected their life in the right path. Inspired by the success the duo conducted workshops in local schools in Compton and recruited many Kids to take up the game. The success of their mission is amazing and it has changed many lives. The team is now called the Compton Cricket Club.
There are several stories of Kids who were planning to join local gangs turning around and taking up the game and realizing the value of their life and the importance of leading it the right way.
The Team is the brink of making history as the First All-American Cricket Team to tour Australia. Ted thinks the Etiquette of the Game can provide good lessons that can be put to use in real life.
There is a great article about this Team in the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-12382224) which came up yesterday. I would surely recommend every cricket loving fan to read this article. The inspiring story of this club and their activities can be read in their website www.comptoncricketclub.org.
The ICC and some of the rich cricketing bodies like the BCCI should donate heavily for this good cause as this is where the real spirit of the Game of Cricket is displayed and realized.
Ted and Katy have done a remarkable job and are really the true servants of Cricket who have made Cricket the real Master, in all meaning and sense.
